British textile designer Jan Olive founded her eponymous label in 2016, and has recently opened a small shop selling soft furnishings and kitchenware featuring her own designs. A graduate from the Somerset College and Plymouth University, she won the Fox Bros competition in 2015 to design a new “Somerset” cloth for their prestigious range. Jan was also awarded a commission from the NHS and Art for Life organisation in Somerset to design a way finding scheme and body of artwork for the Oncology Unit at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. With a background in Fine Art, her designs are all based on her own illustrations, photography, printing or painting. She develops her designs using digital media but always strives to retain her own hand in the finished designs. Jan takes much inspiration from the countryside and coastline of the South West of England but also incorporates the unexpected into her designs. This often makes for a variety of styles in a collection with an eclectic mix of illustrative designs alongside geometrics and more abstract pieces, all held together by a coordinating palette.
For the Traces 2016 project Jan chose to take inspiration from the orchards at Fenton House as well as the Chinese collection of ceramics in the house. Using her illustrative and photographic studies taken on a visit to the property she has created contemporary textile designs printed on to silk for the exhibition.
